Teen acne

Luminum Skinwise

Acne affects nearly every teenager at some point — but it rarely gets treated like the big deal it actually is to the teen living with it. Dermatology wait times of two to three months or longer are common, primary care visits leave little room for skin concerns, and most families end up cycling through drugstore products by trial and error while the school year, sports season, or social calendar moves on without them.

Skinwise provides ongoing clinical guidance, a personalized treatment plan, and consistent follow-through to help teens get clearer skin faster — and feel more confident along the way — with a care team that stays engaged between visits instead of disappearing until the next one.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Everything your care needs, in one membership

Prescription Management

When clinically appropriate, and with required parental consent, the Nurse Practitioner may evaluate and prescribe medications within scope of practice, including:

  • Topical and oral acne treatments
  • Hormonal options where appropriate (such as combined oral contraceptives or spironolactone)
  • Isotretinoin management within iPLEDGE program requirements
  • Treatment plan adjustments based on response

All treatment decisions are individualized and based on clinical evaluation.

Lab Evaluation & Monitoring

When clinically appropriate, the Nurse Practitioner may order and review labs, including:

  • Complete blood count and liver function panel
  • Lipid panel
  • Pregnancy testing, as required under the iPLEDGE program for isotretinoin candidates
  • Hormone panel, when hormonal acne or an underlying condition (such as PCOS) is suspected
  • Other relevant testing

Lab recommendations are individualized based on history, treatment plan, and clinical guidelines.

Care Coordination

Dedicated support from our Nurse Practitioner, care coordinator, and registered nurse, including:

  • Coordination with the teen’s pediatrician or primary care provider
  • Referral and hand-off to in-person dermatology when a condition needs it
  • Coordination with treating providers if systemic or hormonal medications are involved
  • Parent updates and a shared care plan, within the consent framework the family agrees to
Skincare Routine Coaching
  • Building a routine matched to the teen’s actual skin type, not social media trends
  • Sun protection education
  • Honest guidance on which products are worth it — and which aren’t
  • Help avoiding product overlap, irritation, and unnecessary spending
  • Regular check-ins to keep the routine consistent
Confidence & Well-Being Check-In

Skin and self-esteem are connected, especially during the teen years. At every visit, the care team includes a brief, light-touch check-in on how the teen is doing more broadly — not as a substitute for mental health treatment, but as an extra set of eyes:

  • Social confidence and how acne is affecting daily life
  • General mood check-ins as part of routine visits
  • Encouragement and realistic expectations around treatment timelines
  • A clear referral path to a mental health professional if more support is ever needed
Prescription-Strength Monitoring

For teens who are candidates for stronger treatment, ongoing monitoring is built into the program rather than scattered across separate, disconnected visits:

  • Monthly lab monitoring for medications that require it (such as isotretinoin)
  • Support navigating the FDA-required iPLEDGE pregnancy-prevention program for isotretinoin candidates
  • Monitoring for mood changes and other known side effects, with a clear escalation path if concerns arise
  • Liver function and lipid monitoring where clinically indicated
  • Medication adherence support and refill coordination
Acne & Skin Treatment Support

Teen acne isn’t one-size-fits-all, and treatment shouldn’t be either. The program includes support for:

  • Topical and oral treatment options matched to acne type and severity
  • Hormonal acne patterns, including those common in teen girls
  • Body and back acne (“bacne”)
  • Guidance to help prevent and minimize scarring
  • Recognizing when in-person dermatology care (extractions, cystic acne injections, procedures) is the right next step
Unlimited Secure Messaging

Teens and parents both have access to the care team through our web portal or mobile app, with privacy boundaries appropriate to the teen’s age and state law. Support may include:

  • Questions between appointments
  • New breakouts or flare-ups
  • Medication side effect concerns
  • Skincare product questions
  • Encouragement and accountability
Video Visits & Support

Video Visits & Support

  • 1 NP video visit every 4 weeks
  • Up to 2 RN check-ins per month (as needed)

Topics may include:

  • Acne type, severity, and treatment plan review
  • Skincare routine coaching
  • Medication and side effect monitoring
  • Lab review for prescription-strength treatments

Estimated Value

Between a multi-month wait for a dermatology appointment, a rushed in-person visit, and months of trial-and-error with drugstore products, most families spend significant time, money, and frustration before a teen's acne is actually under control — often without anyone checking in on how it's affecting their confidence along the way.

Skinwise provides one coordinated care team focused on getting results faster, keeping the treatment plan on track, and keeping parents in the loop — for less than the cost of a single typical dermatology copay and a drugstore skincare haul combined.

Parental Involvement & Privacy

Because Skinwise serves minors, parent or guardian consent is required to enroll and remains part of the program throughout treatment. Within that framework, the care team works to give teens an appropriate degree of privacy and ownership over their own care — which research consistently shows improves engagement and outcomes for adolescent patients — while keeping parents informed on the treatment plan, progress, and any concerns that need their attention.

Specific consent and privacy practices follow applicable state minor-consent laws, which vary by state and by the type of care involved.

Enrollment Process

  • Parent or guardian enrollment and consent
  • Comprehensive skin and health history assessment, including any current OTC or prescription regimen
  • Initial NP consultation with the teen (parents welcome to join)
  • Personalized treatment plan development
  • Lab orders, if prescription-strength treatment is being considered
  • Ongoing monthly support and monitoring

Disclaimer
This program does not replace pediatric, dermatologic, primary care, or emergency care services. Luminum Health provides non-emergency acne and skin care management and care coordination for adolescent members. Prescriptions and laboratory testing are provided only when clinically appropriate, with required parental consent, and within applicable state regulations. Isotretinoin is prescribed only in accordance with the FDA-mandated iPLEDGE Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program.
